Every Self Study journal is cut, refined and burnished by hand. No two covers age quite the same way. Here's how one comes together, from a single piece of leather to a journal ready to be cherished.

Cutting the Leather.
Each cover starts as a single piece of leather, cut by hand to the traveler's notebook pattern. No two hides are identical, so no two covers ever quite are either.

Softening the Corners.
The edges are edged carefully to create clean circular lines. This small detail gives the journal its refined finish.

Punching the Holes.
Each hole is carefully marked and punched into the leather. Precision here ensures everything lines up beautifully when the journal is assembled.

Setting the Grommets.
The grommets are carefully placed and secured into the leather. They add both strength and character to the finished journal.

Bevelling the Edges.
The sharp edges are gently bevelled to create a softer, smoother feel. It also prepares the leather for the finishing process.

Sanding.
The edges are gradually sanded to remove roughness and imperfections. This creates a smooth surface ready for the final stages.

Applying Burnishing Gum - Tokonole.
A thin layer of burnishing gum is applied to the edges. This helps bind the leather fibres together before polishing.

Burnishing.
The edges are carefully polished until they become smooth and refined. It's the final touch that brings the leather together.
